Delta SkyMiles Credit Card Holders Get Free Checked Bag
Written by Kimberly Bennett on May 15, 2010 – 3:38 pm In a year when many credit card companies have scaled back frequent flyer partnerships and special rewards, American Express and Delta have discovered an appealing perk: free baggage. Starting this month, travelers who pay for their Delta flights using an American Express Delta SkyMiles card will enjoy their first checked bag for free.
While a $25 value may not seem like much, frequent travelers have lamented the airline industry’s move to charge customers for every bag checked. Many large companies have opted not to reimburse employees for bag check charges, making this American Express Delta SkyMiles benefit attractive for business travelers who fly coach. (Delta’s baggage fees are already waived for first class and business class ticket holders, among other groups.)
According to a report in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, company officials made the move to help attract more Northwest Airlines customers to Delta credit card programs. Delta completed its merger with Northwest in 2008 and has targeted advertising for the new credit card benefit at many of Northwest’s former hub cities.
