Finally, a card with a 0% intro balance transfer APR & no balance transfer fee
Written by David Long on January 3, 2011 – 1:42 pmWhen it comes to balance transfer credit cards, you usually can’t have your cake and eat it too. You either have to choose between a card with a 0% introductory balance transfer offer, or a card that has a 0% balance transfer fee. Most of the time, cards with 0% introductory balance transfers come with a 3% to 5% upfront fee, which makes the introductory offer less appealing.
There are very few exceptions to this rule, which is why we are so enthused about a new limited time version of the Discover More. It offers 0% on purchases and balance transfers, with no balance transfer fee.
The only other card we list, with no fee and a 0% introductory balance transfer offer, out of the 245 credit cards we list that have no balance transfer fee, is the Harvard Alumni Association card, which most people can’t get. Let us know if you know of any others!
Before you jump on this offer, also be sure to consider the Citi Platinum Select, with 0% introductory balance transfer rate for 24 months, and a very reasonable 3% balance transfer fee, which is by far the best deal you can get over a 2 year period. Dis

Chase Freedom $150 Signup Version
Written by David Long on December 24, 2010 – 6:58 amChase has four versions of the Freedom card now available. In situations like this, we like to put together tables to make your life easier!
The four versions of Freedom listed below all employ the same rewards program. You get 5% cash back on rotating categories throughout the year, and 1% back on everything else. More on this at bottom of this post.
We’ve made it simple for you by listing them all in the table below.
There are tradeoffs when it comes to intro APR periods vs sign up bonuses. Logically, you want to choose between the $100 sign up bonus Visa with a great 0% introductory APR, versus the $150 sign up bonus Visa with no introductory APR.
Choose the $100 bonus + introductory APR version if you carry a balance, or will potentially carry a balance. Otherwise, get the extra $50.
Can’t wrap your head around 5% rotating categories? The math is much simpler if you think about it as 2% back all year long in every bonus category, instead of 5% for one quarter and 1% for three quarters in each bonus category.
The latest list of rotating Chase Freedom 5% rewards categories for 2011 is the same for all cards.

Best Way To Buy Gas – Gas Credit Cards or Discount Stations?
Written by David Long on December 16, 2010 – 10:28 pmFiguring out how you can score the cheapest gas can get complicated. To determine the optimal pairing of gas credit card and gas station, there are many things to consider. Some gas stations are cheaper than others, some gas credit cards don’t work at warehouse stores (like Sam’s or Costco), and some discount gas stations only take cash. On top of that, there are a whole host of gas credit cards with their own bonus amounts and limitations.
The real question is: What combination of gas credit card and gas station makes for the cheapest gas?
For purposes of this analysis, we took a snapshot of some gas stations in San Jose, California on Dec 8, 2010. However, the purpose of this exercise is to show you how to think about finding the best gas deal, not to point you in the direction of any particular combination of gas stations and gas credit card. Run this same analysis in your own neighborhood and start putting that saved gas money to better use.
On average, the most affordable gas stations in San Jose cost somewhere around $3.19 per gallon when we checked. The
